📘 Legal Definition

‘Ragging’ refers to any act that causes or is likely to cause physical, psychological, or physiological harm, shame, or embarrassment to a student. This includes:

  • Teasing, abusing, or playing practical jokes
  • Forcing a student to perform unwilling acts
  • Acts driven by perverse pleasure or societal encouragement

⚠️ Activities Considered as Ragging

  • Physical abuse: Forcing to eat, drink, smoke, dress/undress
  • Verbal abuse: Swear words, derogatory remarks on appearance, caste, religion, etc.
  • Forced activities: Copying notes, cleaning, skipping classes, performing, misbehaving, browsing objectionable content
  • Lifestyle restrictions: Dress codes, grooming rules, restricted access, forced modes of address
  • Conversational manipulation: Humiliating or threatening interactions designed to undermine confidence

⚖️ Supreme Court Directives

Campus life does not exempt anyone from legal accountability. Institutes are legally bound to report any ragging incident to the local police.

🎓 Guidelines for Seniors

  • Encourage friendly, respectful interactions with freshers
  • Promote voluntary participation in clubs and events
  • Avoid private or coercive interactions during the orientation period
  • Do not force performances or participation under the guise of “talent search”
  • Maintain discipline and avoid over-enthusiasm in engaging freshers
